A Reaffirmed Commitment
In “An Open Letter to Dallas Architects,” Mark Lamster, The Dallas Morning News architecture critic, voiced his disappointment with firms in Dallas for our lack of participation in a recent lecture. We have to say, his criticisms are valid. Mark mentions that Dallas architecture can only become better if we build “a stronger intellectual culture and engage with those who are at the forefront of design. You can’t do that if you don’t show up.” Being called out reminds us that as a global firm that strives to improve local communities, it’s imperative to actively participate in the ongoing conversations. For RTKL, it’s our passion for design and making the world a better place that drives us. It’s also our job to put our words into action. As a design community we should all take a moment to step back and make sure we don’t miss opportunities to engage with experts like Jamie Carpenter in the future. We’re accepting the challenge and will push for more participation from our teams. No excuses, just a reaffirmed commitment to a city we love.

Great response from RTKL! I would also like to see the firms that were mentioned jointly agree to stop knowingly applying their seal to building plans that are in violation of Dallas city codes. RTKL isn’t guilty of this, but some other major firms on the list have a reputation for ” playing in the grey zone.”
