Get to know: Camila Simas
Last month, we announced the opening of our newest office in São Paulo, Brazil. Before leaving to set up operations in South America, RTKL’s Camila Simas discussed why she’s looking forward to relocating to Brazil, what she’ll miss most about London and gave us a glimpse of her life outside the RTKL walls.
As a native of São Paulo, I couldn’t be more excited about the opportunity to initiate RTKL’s efforts in my hometown. The architecture industry is growing exponentially in Brazil, and now is the perfect time for the firm to further its design influence. Establishing an on-the-ground presence is the most effective way to get in contact with existing clients and be able to prospect new opportunities. It’s also the best way to show that RTKL is committed to work in Brazil after almost 20 years of involvement with architecture and design in the country.
I also think RTKL’s sustainability efforts fit well with Brazil’s culture. The country is well-known for taking the lead with environmental initiatives, even with concerns like deforestation. In the field of renewable energy, Brazil is the second-largest producer of bio-fuel ethanol in the world, and its electric power plants produce 90% of the electrical energy consumed here. Few know that Brazil is home to one of the most sustainable cities in the world, Curitiba. My hope is that with increasing focus on sustainability across the world, Curitiba will gain notoriety and be able to spread its sustainable practices to some of Brazil’s largest cities.
I have to say that leaving London is bittersweet. While I’m looking forward to exploring unknown parts of Brazil, there are many things I’ll miss. At the top of my list: people saying “sorry” every single second, sitting in the front of double-decker buses and East End hipsters!
