Simplifying Sustainable Design

Beautiful design is more than skin deep. Good design comes from within, from a foundation that values cultural, contextual integration and resource efficiency. Our sustainable design team developed Matrix by Callison so that anyone working in the built environment, regardless of knowledge or background in sustainable design, could identify the best strategies for building sustainable environments.

This free tool at Matrix.Callison.com features design strategies in the categories of Energy, Water, Waste, Materials and Tools. With easy online access and user-friendly navigation, it evaluates sustainable strategies, identifying the top ones for any project, anywhere in the world. Use it to integrate sustainable design into your retail project in five steps:

Explore. Matrix by Callison spotlights 85 strategies in five categories, 28 strategies specific to retail. It will help you identify sustainable design techniques pertinent to your project. Simply click “Matrix for Retail” to browse through icons illustrating every strategy.

Research. Each strategy offers information, including intent, components, process, cost/savings, benefits, and criteria. Links to external sites provide even more information. The section “complementary strategies” helps you identify other strategies that may be applicable.

Select. The best strategies for your project will be based on the project type, location, brand positioning, existing conditions, opportunities, mandates, and constraints. Once you have had a chance to delve more deeply into the strategies, choose those that are best for your project by selecting “Add to Your Book.”

Personalize. Once you’ve confirmed all of the strategies applicable to your project, you can turn your selected strategies into your own book. Simply select “Download your Book,” and Matrix by Callison will send you a personalized, detailed strategies selection by e-mail.

Implement. Use the information you’ve gathered for immediate project implementation. Share it with clients, consultants, contractors, and vendors. No matter what your team’s experience in sustainable design, the user-friendly layout and succinct descriptions for each strategy will make it easy to integrate into your project.

Matrix by Callison was in use as a proprietary tool for several years before its launch to the public in March. The firm’s Los Angeles sustainable design lead, Amber Richane, used a working version of it for AT&T’s Michigan Avenue Flagship in Chicago.

AT&T MICHIGAN AVENUE FLAGSHIP

This important project had many participants and a short lead time. Matrix by Callison helped the team quickly make informed decisions about sustainable strategies and assess how best to move forward throughout the process. Selecting by relevance, cost impact, and attainability, the team used such strategies as long-term green power purchase, efficient HVAC and lighting systems, and reclaimed materials. Not only did the project win a LEED Platinum Retail CI certification, but it also won a Grand Prize in the 2013 A.R.E. Sustainability Awards.

Matrix by Callison is a tool that exposes the beauty of design beneath its skin. Sustainable design conserves natural resources, inspires innovation, adds value, saves operational costs, and wins over customers. Matrix by Callison will help identify, evaluate, and select design strategies so you can create retail spaces that are environmentally integrated, resource-efficient and beautiful.
